Beginning in 2008, RurAL CAP administered 15 solid waste management projects for the Denali Commission.

Each project focused on improving solid waste management, with an emphasis on protecting local water supplies from contamination. Nearly $1 million in funding has been awarded to communities to implement their solid waste management projects. Several of the communities are purchasing burn units to help eliminate trash buildup in the dumps and landfills.

Other communities are purchasing bulldozers or skid steer loaders to clean up or cover the ash from burn units, or purchasing containers and equipment for recycling programs.
